This is probably the most random blog post I've ever done but it was something I seriously thought about today. On the bus ride home from work, I always stare out at the rolling hills and countryside, watching wildlife and nature glide by. Kites flying in circles, lambs bouncing around and cows staring at the strange metal tin whizzing by them. I've been living in Wales for the last three years and the scenery has yet to bore me and I don't think it ever will.
I grew up as a city girl but the city was never in me. I hated the always busy crowds and the depressing, concrete buildings. I hated the lack of manners and community spirit. I hated the constant air of superiority and in-fighting. I just couldn't get into it and even when I tried, I lasted two days and hated myself for trying to be something I wasn't and hurting myself. So, when the opportunity came to move to the countryside with my partner and family, I grabbed it with both hands, packed up and left and I never looked back. That's not to say I completely cut off, there were still gems in that city who will always have my friendship for a lifetime.
Anyway, back to the countryside, I found myself looking at the most beautiful horses standing on a hill top, some were grazing at the green grass and the others were staring straight ahead. That got me thinking, what were they thinking about? I mean, all they do is walk around, drink water, eat grass and look pretty. Then I thought, why do they need to be thinking about anything? They have all their basic needs met; food, drink, sunshine and space.
Then I thought, ain't that a parallel of our lives? We are at our most happiest when all our basic needs are met, we don't tend to think about anything other than just pure relaxation and satisfaction after we're fed, watered and in a beautiful place. We don't need anything complicated to be happy, animals have taught us that, children have taught us that. Why have we, as adults, found a way to make happiness complicated when we have walking examples of happiness around us?!?
Moving to the countryside gave me space, I have a job that gets me food and drink and there's beautiful weather all year around, even the rain is amazing! So the next time I feel down in the dumps over some silly, irrelevant matter, I will remember that horse and count my blessings because life doesn't have to be complicated and we should put more meaning in the simples thing because they are the things that really matter.
Enjoy the simple things everyone!
